The sheriff continued.
“My house at 218 Alder Street remains solely in my name. No child of mine has authority to list, sell, lease, empty, occupy, or market it without my written consent while I am living.”
Martin said, “That’s not—”
Sheriff Reeves lifted one hand.
He kept reading.
“My will contains a conditional inheritance clause. Any child who abandons me, removes me from my home without informed consent, coerces property action, disables my access to communication, or benefits from such removal shall be treated as having predeceased me for inheritance purposes.”
Peter whispered, “What does that mean?”
Mr. Lawson answered before the sheriff could.
“It means that if the facts show what they appear to show, you disinherited yourselves tonight.”
Elaine gripped the back of a chair.
“The house?” she asked.
“The house is not yours to inherit while your mother is alive,” Mr. Lawson said. “That was your first mistake. Your second was assuming she did not know it.”
