Kevin the realtor raised one hand.
“I was told Mrs. Carter had consented to listing preparations.”
Mr. Lawson entered behind the sheriff, briefcase in hand.
“She did not.”
Kevin looked at the realtor sign as if it had betrayed him.
“I haven’t filed anything.”
“Good,” Mr. Lawson said. “Then you may leave with less trouble than everyone else.”
Kevin gathered his folders so quickly one listing agreement slid across the floor.
Elaine snapped, “Kevin, wait.”
He did not.
That was the first visible crack in my children’s confidence.
