Peter came with groceries in June.
He left them on the porch because he was not allowed inside.
I watched through the curtain as he placed milk, eggs, bread, and peaches on the mat.
Then he stood there, hands empty, looking at the door.
He did not knock.
That was new.
Later, he texted: I know groceries don’t fix it. I just remembered you like peaches in June.
I did not answer for two hours.
Then I wrote: Thank you. Send all further communication through Mr. Lawson unless it concerns health or safety.
It felt cold.
It also felt clean.
