The trust idea began with a woman named Mabel.
She called after seeing the newspaper article months earlier but did not come by until summer.
Her daughter wanted her to “tour” a place two counties away. Her son kept asking about power of attorney. She still owned her farmhouse and still knew exactly where every jam jar belonged.
We sat at my kitchen table with Naomi and Mr. Lawson.
Mabel kept saying, “I don’t want to be difficult.”
Finally I said, “Difficult is what people call you when obedience would benefit them.”
