I rode home in the back of the sheriff’s SUV because my legs had grown too stiff for Deputy Bell’s smaller car.

My torn suitcase sat beside me.

Mr. Lawson followed behind.

Deputy Bell drove separately with the report.

No one played the radio.

At my age, silence can be kind when nobody asks it to explain itself.

As we turned onto Alder Street, my stomach tightened.

The porch light was on.

So were the living-room lamps.

My children’s cars filled the driveway.

A realtor sign lay flat on the porch, ready to be planted.
