He hired a lawyer who suggested I might not have understood my own documents.

Judge Cole ordered an independent evaluation because fairness has rules even when insult does not deserve one.

I sat with Dr. Helen Marsh for ninety minutes.

She asked dates, names, medication questions, current events, subtraction, memory recall, and why I had signed the conditional clause.

I answered everything.

At the end, she asked, “Mrs. Carter, what do you want?”

That question stopped me longer than the math.

“I want,” I said slowly, “to stop being treated as a future estate while I am still a present person.”
