Outside the courthouse, Elaine tried to approach me.
Deputy Bell stepped between us.
Elaine looked wounded, as if boundaries were insults when applied to daughters.
“Mom, please.”
I looked at her pearl earrings.
I had given them to her on her wedding day.
“You packed my old clothes,” I said.
Her face crumpled.
“I was scared.”
“No. You were efficient.”
That cut.
I saw it.
Part of me regretted it.
Most of me did not.
