Martin had called the realtor.
Elaine had begun sorting my bedroom.
Peter had taken pictures of the kitchen to send to a contractor he called “our guy.”
They were not mourning.
They were staging.
The realtor, a nervous man named Kevin Miles, arrived at six with listing forms and a lockbox.
He asked where I was.
Elaine told him I had “transitioned to family care out of town.”
That was the phrase she chose.
Transitioned.
As if I had floated gently into a more convenient category.
