The county paper ran the story two days later.
**ELDERLY WOMAN LEFT AT BUS STATION WINS PROTECTION ORDER OVER HOME**
Elderly woman.
I hated that.
But the rest was accurate enough.
A photograph of the bus station appeared under the headline. Not me, thank God. Just the benches, cold and metal and suddenly famous.
Neighbors brought food. Strangers sent cards. One woman mailed ten dollars and a note reading, “My sons are circling too. Thank you for fighting.”
I read that note three times.
Then I placed it in the fireproof box.
My story was no longer only mine.
