My phone was dead.
Not almost dead.
Dead in the deliberate way things are when someone wants them silent.
Elaine had taken it the night before, saying she needed to “check my settings.” She said I kept missing pharmacy reminders and emergency alerts. I believed her because believing your daughter is easier than admitting she has begun managing you like a problem.
At the station, the screen stayed black.
No charge.
No service.
No saved numbers I could reach.
I had six dollars in cash, one house key, one family photograph, and a bus ticket bought with my own Social Security money.
When I asked the clerk if I could use a phone, he pointed toward an old pay phone on the wall.
It had been out of order so long dust had become part of it.
