Chapter 008 – The House On Alder Street

Chapter 08 - Chapter 008 – The House On Alder Street

While I sat at the station, my children were at my house.

I knew it the way mothers know things they cannot prove yet.

For months, they had spoken around me.

Market value.

Repairs.

Cash offer.

Assisted living.

Simpler life.

Martin said the neighborhood was “turning over.” Elaine said I needed “structure.” Peter said the stairs were dangerous, which was rich coming from a man who had not fixed the loose porch rail after promising three times.

They forgot one thing.

Henry and I bought that house together in 1978 with a war veteran’s loan, cafeteria wages, overtime from the paper mill, and a coffee can of folded bills hidden behind flour.

After Henry died, I refinanced in my name alone.

The deed said:

Ruth Ellen Carter.

Not Carter Children.

Not family trust.

Not whoever yells loudest after breakfast.

Me.

They had left me at the station to make me disappear from a house that had never stopped being mine.
