Chapter 016 – The First Report

Chapter 16 - Chapter 016 – The First Report
Deputy Bell asked questions carefully.
Names.
Ages.
Address.
Medical needs.
Money.
Phone.
Whether I had dementia.
I answered that last one more sharply than I intended.
“No. I misplace reading glasses, not houses.”
Calvin laughed behind the counter.
The deputy did not.
She wrote down every word.
When I told her about the house key, she asked if I felt safe returning home.
I thought of Martin’s temper. Elaine’s cold lists. Peter’s whining panic.
“No,” I said.
Then I added, because old habits fight hard, “But it is still my home.”

Deputy Bell looked up.
“That matters.”
