Eight days after the bus station.
It seemed too soon and too late at once.
Elaine called it “escalation.”
Martin called it “war.”
Peter left three voicemails saying he wanted to tell the truth but needed everyone to calm down first.
I almost called him back.
Then I remembered the car pulling away before sunrise.
Calm had been available then.
They chose speed.
So I chose paper.
Naomi came by the night before court and helped me choose a navy dress.
“Not too soft,” she said.
